SuperSport, SABC now in Cricket World Cup deadlock

Another TV broadcast rights deadlock is on the cards between pay channel SuperSport and the SABC – this time for next month’s 2023 Cricket World Cup.

Earlier this week, the SABC said it had made an offer to MultiChoice, the owners of SuperSport, and was now waiting for a response from the pay channel, which holds the local broadcast rights for the tournament.

The 13th edition of the Cricket World Cup, which will take place in India, will get underway from October 5 and end on November 19.

This comes against the backdrop of the broadcast negotiations for the Rugby World Cup taking place in France.

A deal between MultiChoice and the SABC was clinched with only a few days to go before the tournament started.

By yesterday, no agreement for the Cricket World Cup had been clinched, with well-placed insiders revealing that the public broadcaster has put a mere R4-million on the table for the sub-licence rights, while SuperSport is demanding over R20-million.

Now, it seems the two parties are back on the same street with another deadlock on the cards.

SABC spokesperson Mmoni Seapolelo said: “The SABC can confirm that the negotiations have progressed and should be finalised by next week.”
