Top acts to grace Jazz on the Square over Easter weekend

The annual Jazz on the Square will take place at the Wanderers Cricket Oval in Illovo, Johannesburg, over the Easter weekend.

According to the organisers, “soul-stirring melodies, magnetic energy and vibrant artistry” will mark the event.


The  live music extravaganza will consist of an exceptional fusion of local South African and international artists, delivering a mind-blowing experience that will leave a lasting imprint.

The festival grounds will be adorned with captivating art installations, beauty exhibits that exude elegance, and fashion displays that radiate style. 

The artist line-up for Jazz on the Square Festival is a tapestry of musical brilliance and boundless talent. Festival goers can brace themselves up for soulful performances that will touch their hearts and make their spirits soar.

Zonke in the mix

Singer and songwriter Zonke Dikana, popularly known as Zonke, who rose to stardom in 2011 following the release of her third album, will be one of the artists on the line-up.

Other artists on the line-up include Shekhinah Thandi Donnell, known mononymously as Shekhinah, and Bongeziwe Mabandla who will transport fans to another realm.

Also in the line-up are Afro-soul and jazz artist Mandisi Dyantyis and Marcus Harvey, a songwriter, vocalist and rapper from Alexandra. 

Other big names confirmed for the big gig is chart-topping Sjava and soulful jazz singer  Lindiwe Maxolo.

Maxolo, who hails from Boipatong in the Vaal, is not someone for news headlines. However, her musical pedigree as a singer and academic is widely appreciated. Holding a jazz honours degree (cum laude) from the University of Cape Town, she has performed in the US and Europe, including in places such as Greece and India.

At home she has worked with big names such as Concord Nkabinde, McCoy Mrubata, Feya Faku and Andile Yenana, as well as the late divas Gloria Bosman and Sibongile Khumalo.

New Orleans-SA Connection

In 2006, Maxolo performed in the New Orleans-South African Connection, a cultural exchange dedicated to the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Maxolo is also the music teacher at Thaba-Jabula Secondary School in Klipspruit, Soweto, and a part-time lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand’s jazz department.

Jazz on the Square, a one-day event produced by La Funk, will take place on March 30.
