Muzi Sibiya, one of the accused in the murder of soccer star Senzo Meyiwa, was on Thursday sentenced to a prison term for an unrelated case, according to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).
The NPA said in a statement the Vosloorus magistrate’s court handed Sibiya a 12-year direct imprisonment sentence for attempting to kill Ntombenhle Ndaba and Mfanelo Mbatha after he opened fire at them. The pair miraculously survived the attack.
The court also ruled that Sibiya was unfit to possess a firearm.
The NPA said in a statement: “He was also accused of shooting his girlfriend in December 2014 after she had threatened to blow the whistle for his alleged involvement in the murder of Senzo Meyiwa, for which he had apparently confided in the girlfriend about.”
The NPA welcomed the conviction and sentence and believes the 12-year imprisonment fits the crime of attempted murder.
The long-awaited murder trial of Meyiwa resumed in the high court in Pretoria on Monday. Together with four other co-accused, Sibiya will face charges of murder, attempted murder, armed robbery, possession of firearms without a licence, and the possession of ammunition.
The Orlando Pirates goalminder was shot at the home of his musician girlfriend Kelly Khumalo in Vosloorus, on the east of Johannesburg in 2014.
