Chiefs fire Ntseki, appoint Cavin Johnson as interim coach

Kaizer Chiefs have parted ways with embattled head coach Molefi Ntseki after a rather disastrous and chaotic start to the season.

Amakhosi announced on Monday afternoon that Cavin Johnson will take over as caretaker coach with Dillion Sheppard as his assistant.

Ntseki’s former assistant, Arthur Zwane, is going back to the club’s development structures.

Ntseki has struggled to turn the fortunes of Amakhosi around and the club’s performances have been rather lethargic since he took over in June.

The fans have been on the coach’s nerves, always pelting him with missiles and baying for his blood after defeats to other clubs.

Police and security escort

On several occasions, Ntseki has had to leave the stadiums under heavy police and security escort trying to shield him from throngs of enraged Amakhosi supporters.

These violent acts have since cost the club huge fines and suspensions by the league prosecutors.

The latest incident was after Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at the hands of AmaZulu in the Carling Black Label Knockout at the FNB Stadium.

Reads Chiefs statement on the latest developments: “Following a meeting on Monday morning, Molefi Ntseki’s tenure as head coach of Kaizer Chiefs has ended amicably by mutual consent.

“Given the recent run of disappointing results, the parties agreed that this was the best course of action under the prevailing circumstances.

“Cavin Johnson, who recently joined Chiefs as head of the Youth Development Academy, will take over as the first team coach on an interim basis. Current assistant coach, Dillon Sheppard, will retain his position under Johnson.

“Assistant coach Arthur Zwane will return to his former role within the development structures of the club.”

Ntseki takes over at Chiefs

Ntseki arrived at Chiefs in June 2021 as head of technical and youth development. He took over as the senior team head coach in June 2023.

The statement reads further: “The departing coach expressed his gratitude to the chairman, Dr Kaizer Motaung, and the board of directors for the opportunity to coach Amakhosi, and wished the team all the best for the rest of the season.”

Kaizer Chief sporting director, Kaizer Motaung Jr, said: “I would like to thank coach Ntseki for his contribution to the club since he arrived here, both at development level and with the senior team.

“We wish him success in his future endeavours.”
