Johannesburg – The pre-trial of former eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede kicked off on Monday at the Durban High Court.
Gumede who is also a forerunner for the upcoming ANC eThekwini regional elective conference is facing charges of racketeering, fraud, and corruption relating to the Durban solid waste tender amounting to over R400 million rand during her tenure as the political head of eThekwini municipality.
Other accused include ANC councilors, municipal officials and other private individuals.
Together they are accused of colluding to loot millions of rands from the municipal coffers using fictitious companies.
The high court, earlier today, set a possible trial date for July 18 next year.
The pre-trial hearing could not proceed due to a request for further particulars and changes in the defence teams.
The NPA said it has added charges of racketeering on the State versus Gumede case.
State prosecutor, Ashika Lucken, handed in an amended indictment to the court with the addition of Racketeering charges against the accused.
The NPA said in a statement, “The matter was postponed to 30 November 2021 for request and response to further particulars by the parties. The court also set down a possible trial date for the 18 July 2022.”
