John Block home after release from jail

The department of correctional services has complied with the court order to release former ANC Northern Cape chairperson John Block from prison.

Block was released from jail on Friday after a protracted court battle to force the hand of the powers that be at correctional services.

After the court ordered in September that block be set free in 21 days, correctional head honchos failed to comply with the court order.

Block, led by seasoned legal eagle, Advocate Tembeka Ngcukayitobi, went back to the high court to force their hand.

And las week, the High Court in Kimberley threatened to arrest the national commissioner of prisons and his counterpart in the Northern Cape and Upington correctional.

All who were asked by the court to state why Block is still in prison or face jail time themselves did the right thing and gave the man his walking papers to go home.

“They released him today; he has gone home already,” said Ngcukayitobi.

Block was convicted of fraud, corruption and money laundering in 2015 and sentenced to a 15-year jail term. He only went to jail in 2018 after a long legal battle in courts to avoid going to prison.

This is a developing story.
