Johannesburg – Teachers can breathe a sigh of relief as Vaccinations against Covid-19 are said to roll out this week.
The National Professional Teachers’ Organisation of South Africa (NAPTOSA) issued a statement on the weekend stating that Educators over 40 will be receiving their jabs first and that the rollout is planned to start this Wednesday.
The teacher union said they confirmed that 500 000 doses of the Johson and Johnson vaccine had been secured for their sector.
This is a single-dose vaccine.

“This is the result of the unwavering effort of the Joint Teacher Unions, The Education Ministry, Researchers and supporters that ensured this became a reality. At a meeting held on June, 2021, with the DG of Department of Basic Education (DBE), the Unions were apprised of how the process will unfold,” said executive director of NAPTOSA, Basil Manuel.
He explained that registration will be automatic and that the Department of Health will educate and guide the sector.
“The beneficiaries will include all teaching and non-teaching staff in the public sector, inclusive of SGB funded personnel and staff of teacher unions. Vaccination will be voluntary, however, NAPTOSA, together with the other teacher unions and DBE urges all eligible Education Sector Staff to embrace the special opportunity to be vaccinated,” said Manuel.
More than 3500 teachers are said to have died as a result of the deadly virus since last year March.
