Vavi hospitalised – but to be discharged today

South African Federation of Trade Unions Secretary General Zwelinzima Vavi said he will be discharged from hospital today.

Vavi, who tested positive for Covid-19, was admitted to an undisclosed hospital last night for lung infection.

Speaking to Sunday World from his hospital bed, Vavi said he will be discharged from hospital today to recuperate at his home. He disputed early media reports that he was rushed to hospital after struggling to breath.

“Yes I am in hospital but I did not struggle to breath! I had heaviness in my bag and doctors said there was a lung infection! I am being discharged today,” he said.

Vavi also said that his seven year old child has tested positive for the Covid-19 disease, which has so far claimed the lives of 11 South Africans and infected 1655.

“I have no idea where and who infected me and how! All family tested negative except one twin who is 7. My wife’s test had to be repeated yesterday as it came back incomplete,” he said.

He further said the doctors advised him that his positive child should not be hospitalised as he would be able to fight off the virus without any medical intervention.
