Sasol’s new non-executive director to bolster decarbonisation

Sasol has appointed Andreas Schierenbeck as the chemical company’s independent non-executive director with effect from January 1.

Schierenbeck is the founder and director of HH2E, a company that produces green hydrogen for the German market. Green hydrogen is a clean energy source that only emits water vapour and leaves no residue in the air, unlike coal and oil.

He is also a former CEO of energy company Uniper, where he served from 2019 to 2021. Prior to that, Schierenbeck was CEO at machinery industry company ThyssenKrupp Elevator.

Sasol’s board of directors comprises 13 members of which 10 are independent non-executive directors. Schierenbeck will be expected to bolster the company’s decarbonisation efforts.

Sipho Nkosi, who is also an independent non-executive director and chairperson of the board, welcomed Schierenbeck, noting that he comes with excellent skills needed in the team.

“I am pleased to welcome Andreas to the Sasol board. I am confident his appointment will strengthen our decarbonisation efforts, in line with our confirmed climate change targets,” Nkosi said.

“In particular, we look forward to benefitting from Andreas’ skills, expertise and experience, as we pursue further decarbonisation opportunities through the green hydrogen value chain.”
