The SA Revenue Service (SARS) will continue to honour virtual appointments in the absence of its striking workers, it said on Thursday, calling on all taxpayers to utilise digital platforms to file tax-related documents.
“In the event that a virtual booking is not honoured, please note that the branch will follow up to do the necessary service recovery,” the revenue service said in a statement.
SARS commissioner Edward Kieswetter added that thousands of taxpayers have already filed their tax returns using online services.
“At this stage, we’d encourage all taxpayers to use our digital platforms. This filing season we’ve had 700 000 taxpayers who’ve filed their returns on our additional platforms,” said Kieswetter, noting that work continues seamlessly online.
On Tuesday, SARS shut down 18 branches across the country as the wage strike by thousands of workers intensified.
SARS’ staff first embarked on strike in May when labour and the employer failed to settle on a wage agreement. The revenue service has proposed a 1.39% wage increase that has been rejected by the unions.
