Workers scathing as firm goes for months without paying salaries

Q Global is under fire from the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) for not paying workers’ salaries since February.

Jason Brewer, who is also the CEO of Marula Mining, is in charge of Q Global, a commodities company with its headquarters in Witbank, Mpumalanga.

Quinton Van der Berg serves as CEO of Q Global.

Numsa claims that the company has been flagrantly withholding employees’ paychecks since the end of February.

Numsa wants workers paid immediately

Acting regional secretary for Numsa in Mpumalanga, Pholo Sebotsa, stated that the union vehemently denounces the company and demands that all money owed to employees as of the end of February be paid immediately.

“In February, 212 employees were under consideration for retrenchment as part of a Section 189 consultation process,” said Sebotsa.

“Workers have not received a single penny from the corporation since the Section 189 process was completed at the end of June.

“According to the managers, the severance benefits can only be paid by the end of August.

“Since our members do not trust these employers, Numsa was forced to accept their answer, despite the fact that it greatly upsets our members.”

Sebotsa continued by stating that Q Global has a long history of being unreliable due to its inability to fulfil the company’s contractual duties.

Plan to sell the company

“During the consultation on Section 189, it became apparent to the union that these dishonest executives intend to sell the company, and our concern is that they want to do it without following proper processes and without paying workers what they owe them.

“It is important to state that during the consultation on the Section 189 process, Q Global did not furnish Numsa with its financial statements, even though there is a court order ordering them to do so.

“It is our view that they are hiding the true state of their finances so that they can run away without paying a cent.”

Sebotsa continued, saying that the union is seeking legal advice on how to handle this particular aspect of the problem.

“Numsa will march to the head office of the company soon, so that we can expose the executives for the suffering that they are imposing on workers,” he said.
