American megastar Chris Brown out on $6.7m bail for assault

R&B superstar Chris Brown has been granted bail by the Southwark Crown Court in London, allowing him to proceed with his “Breezy Bowl XX” world tour despite facing assault charges.

The Wednesday ruling, which was overseen by Judge Tony Baumgartner, followed Brown’s arrest in Manchester on May 15 for allegedly attacking music producer Abraham Diaw with a tequila bottle at Tape nightclub in Mayfair, London, on February 19.

The prosecutors called the incident a “vicious, unprovoked attack”, claiming Brown struck Diaw multiple times and then punched and kicked him, with CCTV footage supporting the allegations.

Diaw has filed a $16-million (R287 670 400) civil lawsuit against Brown for injuries sustained.

Initially denied bail on May 16 at Manchester magistrate’s court due to concerns over his flight risk, stemming from the charge of grievous bodily harm and his 2010 UK ban following a prior assault conviction, Brown’s legal team successfully argued for his release.

The court imposed strict conditions: $6.7-million security payment, residence at a designated UK address, surrender of his passport when not touring, no contact with Diaw, and a ban from Tape nightclub.

Brown’s attorneys arranged for his passport to be held by legal counsel during international performances, ensuring the tour can begin on June 8 in the Netherlands, with stops in Germany, the UK, Ireland, France, Portugal, and North America.

From the cage to the stage

Brown’s legal representative, Mark Geragos, stated: “Chris is fully committed to cooperating with the legal process and fulfilling his obligations to fans worldwide. This bail decision allows him to balance both responsibilities.”

His tour manager, Larry Bey, added: “We’re thrilled the court recognised Chris’ right to continue his work. The ‘Breezy Bowl XX’ tour will go on as planned, delivering the energy fans expect.”

Upon release from HMP Forest Bank in Salford, Brown posted on Instagram: “From the cage to the stage, let’s go!”

Brown’s team has not entered a plea, with the next hearing set for June 20 at Southwark Crown Court, near a scheduled Frankfurt show.

For 36-year-old Brown, this ruling is a lifeline to sustain his career amid ongoing legal scrutiny.

Adherence to bail terms is critical to avoid re-arrest, and his team remains optimistic, with Geragos noting: “We’re focused on ensuring Chris meets all conditions while preparing for a robust defence.”
