Thespian Baby Cele has been in the acting industry for almost 25 years, and she believes she has managed to stay relevant in the industry because of her character.
Speaking to Sunday World this week, Cele said she is easy to work with. She knows her worth and believes she has been lucky when it comes to getting acting gigs.
“I am not sure whether it is luck, but I have so much respect for the people that I work with. Regardless of whether that person is a producer or my fellow co-stars. I respect everybody, and I make sure that I prepare every day beforehand,” said Cele.
Picky on character roles
Cele, who is now currently on Mzansi Magic’s television series Sibongile and The Dlaminis, said she is not one of those people who will take anything just because she needs money or is hungry.
“I think my character helped me because I was able to be given what I deserved. However, that sometimes can be both good and bad. Some may think that I am being given special treatment, but that is not the case.
“I believe in the saying that you are what you eat, and if you respect yourself, you gain that respect. And I do not make noise about proving who I am and what I can deliver.”
New role different from her past roles
She added that her current character, Samke, is not similar to the roles she has played in the past. Her roles were of glamour characters in the past.
“Samke is a village woman who had a music career but was done dirty by her two friends. And now she is back to claim what is hers. I want people to resonate with Samke and see themselves in her. And I have played a lot of characters that are selfish. She also possesses that character, but she is not rude, but speaks her truth.”
