The Mzansi Wethu telenovela Sibongile and the Dlaminis has been renewed for a second season but this time with a new lead actress, Nsikelelo Mthiyane.
Mthiyane will be replacing Luyanda Zwane, who, according to reports, chose not to renew her contract for the second season.
Zwane also denied the rumours that she was leaving the show because of her bad attitude and being a drama queen.
“People will always have opinions on how they experience you. I have never heard anyone on any set complain about me being a drama queen. Those who know me, know how I am. I don’t pay too much attention to negativity. Everyone experiences people differently,” she said.
Sibongile’s journey continues in Season 2
The telenovela is adapted from the popular Zambian story Zuba and the Solalas. Sibongile and The Dlaminis follows the journey of Sibongile Mbambo. She is portrayed by Zwane, an innocent young woman from the rural villages. She is forced to leave her family and dreams behind to become a domestic worker. The setting is in the lavish mansion of the affluent Dlamini family, her employers.
In Season 1, viewers saw Sibongile’s heart being crushed by Nomalanga’s pregnancy with Kwenzo’s child. She had to go back home to the village in Ixopo and deal with her not-so-motherly stepmom, Deliwe. She also had to face her disappointed father until the truth about her circumstances came out.
Shirley Adonisi, M-Net Director for Local Entertainment Channels, expressed excitement about the series. She said: “Sibongile and The Dlaminis has been a gift that keeps on giving for audiences. Season 1 surpassed 1 million viewership numbers and we can proudly say that it has been a resounding success.”
“We are excited to embark on this second chapter of Sibongile’s journey. And we know that the new additions and changes will make this story even more exciting.”
The premiere of Season 2 of Sibongile and The Dlaminis will air on Mzansi Wethu, Channel 163, from July 29 Monday – Wednesday at 6.30pm.
