‘Big Bang Theory’ announces new spin-off series

The insanely popular Big Bang Theory, which ended almost four years ago, has announced that a spin-off of the comedy show is in the works.

The announcement was made during the Warner Bros Discovery press day recently, where the company also revealed its new platform Max, a rebranded combination of HBO Max and Discovery+.

Executive producer Chuck Lorre, who co-created the original Big Bang Theory series with Bill Prady, will be developing the new show for Max.

At the moment, plot details are being kept under wraps.

While many fans hoped the show would focus on one of the characters from the original series, such as Rajesh Koothrappali, it is unlikely since many of the actors have not been keen to revisit their original roles.

They have also not been open in becoming involved in any other series after a 12-year stint on the original show.

One popular theory is that the new show will focus on Paige, a reoccurring character in the Young Sheldon series.

An uncommon reappearing on the series, Paige is another child prodigy in Dr John Strugis’ class. The last few seasons of the series have seen her rebel after her parents split up, and has dropped out of college. This is a drastically different path to Sheldon.

Running for 12 seasons from 2007 to 2019, The Big Bang Theory starred Johnny Galecki and Jim Parsons as two physicist friends, with Kaley Cuoco playing their neighbour Penny.

CBS’s current Big Bang Theory prequel series Young Sheldon that centres on a nine-year-old version of Jim Parson’s character Sheldon Cooper, played by Iain Armitage, is in its sixth season.

While the original show may have ended, fans have continued to tune into Young Sheldon, a series focused on the early life of Big Bang Theory character Sheldon, which is also narrated Jim Parsons.

The show has been a success since it started in 2017 and is still in production. It is consistently ranked as US’s highest-viewed comedy on air and has recently wrapped filming for the seventh season.
