Rental disputes are very much a South African staple and this intricate part of our public life is to enjoy a drama-filled wider exposure on Mzansi Wethu‘s latest reality show Mastende – a colloquial term referring to women who own rental property.
However, the show produced by Tribal Media House, will tackle disputes involving all landlords and their tenants through real stories with all the confrontation, solutions and plenty more.
Each episode will tackle a real situation in the relationship of a landlord and their tenant. There will be arguments, screaming matches and outright confrontations which the show’s security personnel will have to be on their toes to diffuse.
In a country where renting is as common as a sunny day, disputes between landlords and tenants have become the stuff of legend and sometimes, the heart of community gossip.
Viewers can expect explosive drama from random rental hikes to gate-locking landlords.
The producers describe Mastende as not just a regular reality show but an interventionist adventure to give the challenges in the relationships between tenants and landlords logical and educational conclusions.
There will also be plenty of fun side as the host, comedian and actor Tumi Matila, aka “Stopnonsons”, uses his irreverent humour to calm volatile situations.
Shirley Adonisi, director of local entertainment channels at Multichoice, said Mastende stories will not just tap into compelling stories but also create a bridge of understanding.
“It’s interesting, it’s real, and it’s reflective of our very own communities. Trust us, you won’t want to miss out on this emotional account of rental relationships,” said Adonisi.
Mastende will air on Mzansi Wethu on Friday, 3 November at 6.30pm on DStv channel 163.
