Countdown to Metro FM Music Awards begins

This year, the country’s prestigious awards that honour its musical artists is going to be a special one as it takes place on the day the country celebrates 30 years of democracy.

The countdown to the Metro FM Music Awards 2024 has officially begun. And all roads lead to Mbombela on Freedom Day. This year’s awards ceremony will for the second year, take place at Mbombela Stadium, in Mpumalanga, on April 27.

Music enthusiasts and the entertainment space are set to take over the beautiful town of Mbombela next Saturday.  This year’s edition of the awards promises attendees a lifestyle experience that is set to have the industry and revelers enthralled. The awards are which are proudly headline-sponsored by the Motsepe Foundation.

Monumental connection to the country’s 30th anniversary of democracy

Metro FM Radio Business Manager Kina Nhlengethwa told Sunday World this week that the awards are set to be a monumental event. This year they coincide with the nation’s 30th anniversary of democracy.

“The theme, ‘BLACK TO THE FUTURE’, is a powerful testament to this significant milestone. But the celebration doesn’t stop at the awards ceremony. We’re taking it a step further with the addition of a Freedom Day Music Festival at the stadium. A vibrant tribute to our country’s 30-year journey towards freedom and progress,” said Nhlengethwa.

The organisers are anticipating a crowd of 10,000 people. Accommodation has become a challenge, with all hotels reaching full capacity.

“We are actively collaborating with local authorities to pinpoint additional establishments that can be leased for our guests. We are committed to ensuring a seamless experience for all attendees.”

The organisers of the awards plan to make the procedure smooth. Especially after attendees had been through the hassle of traffic entering the stadium.

“In our continuous effort to enhance the event experience, we have incorporated a park-and-ride system into this year’s plan. This initiative addresses the traffic concerns identified from last year’s event.

“We’ve partnered with a reputable bus company to provide shuttle services. This will be from the government complex open ground and Bergvlam School to the stadium. The shuttle service will commence at 3pm from both locations. This is part of our commitment to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for all attendees.”


Grammy-winner Tyla up for six gongs

Grammy award-winning singer Tyla dominated this year’s nominations. She has been nominated in six categories, for her hit song Water. The vivacious songstress has been nominated in the categories of Song of the Year and Best Female Artist. Also Best Music Video, Best Viral Challenge, and Artist of the Year.

Amapiano sensation and producer extraordinaire Kabza De Small, real name Kabelo Motha is nominated in five categories. He will go head-to-head with Austin Baloyi, popularly known as Tyler ICU , in the same categories. Kabza will have to prove if he still reigns supreme as the king of the game. He collaborated with Mthunzi Ndimande on his latest EP.

Amapiano artists still reign supreme

The producer is nominated in the Best Produced Album, Best Collaboration, Song of the Year, Best Amapiano, and Best Male Artist. Tyler ICU’s nominations include Artist of the year, Best Collaboration, Song of the Year, Best Viral Challenge, Best Amapiano. All for the hit song  Mnike.
