It is the end of an era after nearly three decades of drama, love, and cultural pride.
The shocking news was revealed by SABC2 and Word of Mouth Productions that Muvhango, the beloved Tshivenda soapie, is set to wrap up.
On August 8 at 9pm, the soapie’s final episode will air, leaving fans both heartbroken and grateful for the incredible journey.
Since its debut on April 7, 1997, Muvhango has been a cultural juggernaut, serving up juicy storylines that blended Tshivenda tradition with modern-day spice.
Created by visionary Duma Ndlovu, the show gave a megaphone to a so-called “minority” language during South Africa’s transformative years, making Tshivenda a celebrated part of Mzansi’s TV landscape.
Fans kept glued to their screens
Muvhango transformed characters such as Edward, Catherine, Doobsie, Doris, Chief Azwindini, Thandaza, James, Mulalo, KK, and the royal family into household names, captivating viewers and keeping them glued to their TV screens.
Who could forget the drama? Mashudu Mukwevho’s death in Johannesburg occurred while he was caught between his Sowetan wife, Catherine, and his traditional wife, Vho-Masindi.
A fierce tug-of-war over his body ensued. Following that, a sizzling love triangle developed between Thandaza, Edward, and Doobsie, which had viewers screaming in excitement.
Viewers were divided by Azwindini’s polygamous adventures with Susan, Pfuluwani, Vele, and Mpho, and his throne rivalry with Mulalo.
And not to forget Thandaza and Ranthumeng’s dreamy wedding, Teboho’s jaw-dropping shoot-to-kill moment, and KK’s flamboyant suits and larger-than-life furniture stealing every scene.
Voice to the voiceless
Ndlovu, the mastermind behind it all, reflected on the show’s legacy: “Muvhango put Tshivenda on the map, giving a voice to a language that was overlooked. It’s been an honour to create unforgettable TV moments for Mzansi.”
SABC2 acting group executive for video entertainment, Lala Tuku, added: “Muvhango wasn’t just a soapie; it was a celebration of our culture, identity, and pride.
“It inspired and united us for 28 years. As we say goodbye, SABC2 is ready to keep telling stories that reflect the heartbeat of South Africa.”
As we brace for the final curtain, SABC2 salutes the tireless cast and crew led by Ndlovu and gives a massive “Ri a livhuwa” to the millions of fans who tuned in every Monday to Friday.
