More than 60 films to be screened at Joburg Film Festival

More than 60 films have been selected for the 2023 Joburg Film Festival which is set to take place at the end of January next year.

The festival has been moved to the end of January into February due to the World Cup.

It will kick off its six-day celebration of filmmaking and storytelling excellence on Tuesday 31 January 2023.

Earlier this year the return of the festival was confirmed, and it will feature a well-known team including Zimbabwean-born Festival Curator Keith Shiri and Film Festival Programmer Jack Chiang.

It will showcase films from over 35 countries including 20 African premiers and 27 Mzansi premiers in cinemas in Soweto, Maboneng, Sandton, and Rosebank.

The Joburg Film Festival line-up includes films from South Africa, Tunisia, Brazil, Seoul, Brazil, USA, Japan, Morocco, and more, with a mix of feature films and documentaries showcasing stories that cross cultural boundaries.

Joburg Film Festival Executive Director Timothy Mangwedi said: “The Joburg Film Festival offers a multicultural international standard cinema experience for film lovers young and old, right in the heart of Joburg. Not only does the festival showcase thought-provoking and debate-stoking films from around the world, but also brings back the nostalgic storytelling from yesteryear via this selection of films being screen. Everyone is welcome to join the celebration.”

The long list of exceptional titles includes Utima, A Far Shore, Music is my life, Surviving Gaza, and Time Spent With Cats Is Never Wasted, Under The Fig Trees, Role, Oink.
