Norma Mngoma to lay bare experience of divorcing ANC bigwig Malusi Gigaba

Launching on Showmax in June, Untied offers a compelling look at divorce through the unfiltered stories of some of South Africa’s most notable women.

Hosted and co-produced by award-winning broadcaster Relebogile Mabotja, the series begins with businesswoman Norma Mngoma and includes reality TV stars Beverly Steyn and Nonku Williams, actresses Dawn Thandeka King, Mona Monyane and Palesa Madisakwane, media personality Zandi Nhlapo, and model Sonia Booth.

Each episode addresses the emotional weight of their ended marriages. Relebogile revealed how she joined United. “It is quite a story,” she chuckled.

“My company pitched for it initially and didn’t get it. Later, they asked me to host, and since I love working behind the scenes, becoming an associate producer felt like the stars aligned,” she said.

Show is rooted in empowerment

Untied focuses on women’s experiences post-divorce, giving voice to often-unspoken pain.

“There are hidden traumas and heartaches people rarely share publicly. While it centres on women, the stories of love, hurt, and healing connect with everyone married, single, or divorced.”

Unlike other talk shows that might chase sensationalism, Untied is rooted in empowerment.

“I’m intentional about fostering a safe space. I use vulnerability as a strength, approaching every conversation with care to keep it respectful and real, whether with public figures or everyday people,” she said.

Expect a range of narratives, from betrayal and family strife to abuse, depression, and uplifting tales of resilience.

“No episode left me unmoved,” Relebogile admitted. “These women’s strength in overcoming their challenges was staggering.”

Celebrating strength through vulnerability

A particularly tough moment came when discussing the loss of a child. “As a parent, that broke my heart. Holding back tears was nearly impossible.”

Untied challenges explain why women face harsher judgement after divorce.

“Girls are raised to be wives; their value is tied to marriage. Men don’t face the same pressure, so women are scrutinised more when marriages end, as if their worth hinges on a ring.”

By sharing these raw stories, Untied aims to transform South Africa’s views on marriage and divorce.

Relebogile’s role in Untied reflects her diverse journey.

“I imagined Broadway, then law, then business,” she said. “My curiosity and love for learning have led me to embrace every opportunity.”

United is set to inspire and challenge, celebrating strength through vulnerability. Catch it on Showmax starting June 24.
