The South African Traditional Music Achievements Awards (Satma) will still go ahead as scheduled in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.
This after the provincial government withdrew as the financial backer and host of the South African Music Awards (Samas) after concerns that the budget has ballooned.
The organisers of the Satma have since assured that the show goes on for the highly anticipated awards to be held at the Durban Christian Centre (Dome) on December 15.
Tribute to Solomon Mahlangu
Dumisani Goba, founder of the Satma, paid a tribute to freedom fighter Solomon Kalushi Mahlangu and said the organisers are adding a poignant touch to the musical event.
“It is very crucial to honour anyone who has done well, especially the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for us,” said Goba. “It cannot be the government’s role to celebrate our heroes – not only when they are dead.”
Goba extended his appreciation to sponsors and stakeholders for their role in the success and of the awards.
Together with the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture and the SABC, the organisers of the Satmas have since announced a list of nominees for the 17th edition of the awards.
The announcement took place at the SABC Radio M1 Studio in Auckland Park, Johannesburg recently.
Some of 2023 nominees
“Congratulations to all the 17th Satma awards nominees for 2023, we extend our best wishes for the upcoming awards ceremony,” Goba said.
“Isiqu Accountants has officially opened the voting process and we urge the public to participate and support their favorite nominees.”
Among this year’s nominees is actress Neliswe Sibiya, who is nominated for Best Traditional Social Media Influencer.
Joining Sibiya on the list in the same category is Londiwe Sishi, who is fondly known as Ibhinca Elimhlophe.
“I have been fortunate enough to get recognised and nominated for a Satma award in the category of Best Traditional Social Media Influencer,” said Sishi.
“What an honour! Thank you to everyone who saw me fit to be in this category and thought of me as deserving, that on its own is already a win for me.”
