Thembisa Mdoda, undertaker partner to give low-income families dignified burials

South Africa faces a sobering reality: an estimated 1,300 people pass away daily, according to Statistics South Africa. For many families, particularly in under-resourced communities, the grief of losing a loved one is compounded by the financial burden of arranging a dignified burial.

Icebo Labantu, a groundbreaking reality series hosted by renowned actress and presenter Thembisa Mdoda, premieres on SABC1 on Sunday, July 6, at 5.30pm. Mdoda has previously hosted reality shows, including the sixth season of Our Perfect Wedding and 2 Families and a Wedding Dress.

Restores dignity

This human-interest show, supported by Icebolethu Group, one of South Africa’s leading funeral service providers with a footprint countrywide, aims to restore dignity and offer hope to families struggling to afford proper funerals for their loved ones. The show is about assisting low-income families to bury their families by covering funeral costs, among other things.

The funeral undertakers were last September accused of double standards when some unhappy clients complained that Icebolethu only gives celebrities a five-star service.

The group’s communications head, Nkosenhle Hlophe, put the blame on their community suppliers. Hlophe added that the incident had “affected their reputation and the trust that many families put on us”.

With Mdoda at the helm, Icebo Labantu is more than a television programme. It’s a heartfelt mission to provide emotional and practical support during life’s most challenging moments.

Selected families profiled

Mdoda is known for her warmth, authenticity, and deep connection with South African audiences. She brings her signature empathy to Icebo Labantu. The series follows selected families as they navigate the emotional and logistical challenges of loss.

Through Icebolethu’s social impact initiative, Icebolethu Cares, qualifying families receive direct funeral assistance. This ensures their loved ones are laid to rest with the respect they deserve.

“This isn’t just a show. This is a real-life mission. We are creating a space where dignity, empathy, and humanity come first.”

She guides viewers and families alike through these deeply personal stories.

Icebo Labantu marks a pioneering effort in South African television. It addresses a national crisis with sensitivity and purpose. Icebolethu Group, with over 15 years of experience supporting families in their darkest hours, backs the initiative with its expertise and resources.

It’s about honour, love, and showing up

Nomfundo Mcoyi, CEO of Icebolethu Group, emphasises the significance of the project.

“When the team brought this idea forward, there was no hesitation, it had to be done. This is the first campaign of its kind in our space. It’s about honour, love, and showing up for people when they need it most.”

The series aligns with Icebolethu’s long-standing commitment to social impact, taking their mission to a national stage. By partnering with SABC1 and Mdoda, they aim to provide practical assistance and spark a broader conversation about dignity in death.

“Every single person in South Africa has experienced the death or the effects of a passing,” says Ofentse Thinane, Channel Head of SABC.

A call to help citizens

“It is never easy, and, in some instances, you can never be fully prepared for it. Icebo Labantu heeds the call to help South African citizens who have no means to bury a loved one.”

With Mdoda’s compassionate hosting, the show promises to be both heart-wrenching and uplifting. It showcases stories of resilience, community, and humanity.

Each episode will highlight the emotional journeys of families. It offers viewers a chance to reflect on the universal experience of loss while celebrating the power of collective support.
