Sean Barber, founder and CEO of the Rockets brand, has transformed South African hospitality over the past two years with bold expansions and a passion for excellence.
From launching Rockets Beach Club Umhlanga to revamping Rockets Bryanston and debuting Rockets Media, Barber’s vision has redefined dining and entertainment.
“Rockets isn’t just a business; it’s a lifestyle that celebrates South African creativity,” Barber says.
Premium dining meets vibrant nightlife
Originally aiming for a career in professional sports, a rugby injury at 15 redirected Barber to accounting. After qualifying as a chartered accountant and working in New York and London, he discovered his true calling in hospitality while living in Wimbledon Village.
In 2007, with no formal training, he launched the first Rockets venue. It blended premium dining with vibrant nightlife.
“I saw an opportunity to create some unique spaces where people could dine, dance, and connect,” he reflects.
Today, Rockets spans 16 locations, and has earned many accolades. These include Best Restaurant in South Africa (2018), and Best Bar in Africa, Middle East, and Asia (2018). Also Best Lifestyle Restaurant (2021, 2022, 2024).
Recent milestones showcase Barber’s ambition. Rockets Beach Club Umhlanga (KZN) has brought glamour to the Umhlanga strip. But the revamped Rockets Bryanston remains Johannesburg’s go-to destination.
The launch of Rockets Media marks a bold step into music and entertainment. It creates synergies with hospitality. Despite challenges like the Covid-19 pandemic, Barber’s financial acumen ensured resilience.
Navigating tough times
“Navigating tough times taught me to balance creativity with discipline,” he notes.
Central to Barber’s mission is nurturing South African talent. Through Rockets Media and the upcoming Dance Afrika record label, he provides platforms for artists to shine.
“South Africa has incredible creative potential. I want Rockets to be a stage for that talent,” Barber says.
His venues integrate live performances, fostering an environment where musicians and DJs can thrive. This also amplifies local voices and celebrates cultural diversity.
Barber’s influence extends beyond Rockets. At the GQ and Standard Bank SA Business Masterclass, he shared insights with GQ Editor-in-Chief Molife Kumona, inspiring entrepreneurs.
Innovative approach
The launch of Rockets Man, a barber chain, was highlighted at the GQ Grooming Masterclass. This showcased his innovative approach to every venture.
“Entrepreneurship is about taking risks and staying true to your vision,” Barber told the audience.
A devoted family man, Barber balances success with personal values. These are guided by his motto, “Be the best you can be”.
Looking ahead, he’s excited about Rockets Media and Dance Afrika. These two projects will further elevate South African entertainment. By creating jobs, nurturing talent, and setting global standards, Barber is shaping a brighter future.
“South Africa has so much to offer. Rockets is about showcasing that to the world,” he says. With 16 venues and counting, Sean Barber’s Rockets continues to redefine what’s possible in hospitality and entertainment.
