Zakes Bantwini celebrates 20 years in music with a bash that honours creative arts

Grammy Award-winning artist Zakes Bantwini has unveiled the very first edition of the Mayonie Festival at Constitution Hill.

The event is set to take place on November 30 at the historic Constitution Hill in Johannesburg.

Presented by his record label Mayonie Productions, the festival will celebrate the evolution of Afrohouse and Afrotech through a powerful blend of music, art, and style.

“After 20 years in the industry, we wanted to create a platform to showcase established artists and also uplift emerging talent.

Celebration of shared love for music

“The festival is a way to bring our community together and celebrate our shared love for music and culture,” he told Sunday World.

The Mayonie Festival will immerse guests in a curated world of sound and culture.

“Con Hill is a venue steeped in history and significance, making it the perfect backdrop for Mayonie Fest,” said Zakes Bantwini, whose real name is Zakhele Madida.

“It symbolises resilience and transformation, much like our music journey.”

Making history

In 2023, he made history when he became the first African artist to headline the stadium for his Abantu concert.

However, the turnout was not as he had anticipated.

He tries his hand at eventing again at the Mayonie Open Air Festival.

“The most challenging part is getting the right team,” he said.

“A team that understands the vision, who are passionate about it, and want to execute it. It takes a team that loves what you do and is committed to bringing your vision to life. No matter the challenges that arise.”

Using Education to boost the arts

Zakes Bantwini recently completed the executive education programme from Harvard in the Business of Entertainment, Media, and Sports (BEMS).

He plans to use what he learned in boosting the South African economy and the arts.

“Graduating from Harvard has equipped me with valuable skills and knowledge. This will enhance both my music and business ventures,” he said.

“It has provided me with insights into effective management and strategic planning. I can apply them to Mayonie Productions and our initiatives,” he added.

“Education allows me to approach my career with a more holistic understanding of the industry. Ultimately benefiting the artists and projects I support.”
