Flamboyant media personality Somizi Mhlongo finally graduates in fashion design

Somizi Mhlongo, a flamboyant media personality who received a certificate from the Villioti Fashion Institute, continues to demonstrate that age is not an obstacle to ambition.

Sunday World revealed in 2023 that Mhlongo had taken the bold decision to return to school and enroll in a fashion design programme.

For someone who left school in Standard 7 (Grade 9) to pursue his aspirations in entertainment, this was a brave move.

Two years later, Mhlongo has shared an encouraging update on his academic journey, demonstrating his steadfast dedication.

Speaking to Sunday World on Wednesday, Mhlongo said: “I am super proud of myself for constantly proving how focused and driven I am.”

“Whenever I start something, I make sure I finish it; that’s just who I am. I’m definitely going back next year for a higher certificate and eventually a degree before I turn 60.”

Reflecting on how far he has come, he said this chapter has been deeply rewarding both personally and creatively.

Eyes set on fashion design degree

“I have achieved so much in entertainment, but this, investing in my education, hits differently,” he shared.

“It is a reminder to myself and to everyone watching that it is never too late to level up, no matter where you are in life.”

The former Idols SA judge stated in 2023 that his love of fashion and his expanding company, Somphire Kids, were the driving forces behind his decision to go back to school.

He signed up for a six-month part-time course and stated his desire to earn a fashion design degree eventually.

Mhlongo, who is well-known for his extravagant style and unrivaled work ethic, claimed that education has given him a renewed sense of purpose.

“With this one [fashion course], I was ready. I am content with who I am and where I am in life. It is always about timing at the end of the day.”
