Former Mrs SA Palesa Matjekane launches new international pageant

She was crowned Mrs South Africa in 2022 after stiff competition against other hopefuls. As she hangs up her tiara, businesswoman, Global Citizen ambassador and entrepreneur Palesa Matjekane (38) unveils Miss Polo Universe Africa – a first of its kind –  in collaboration with the Dubai Royal family.

Her passion lies in pageantry, offering mentoring for young beauty queens. She is heavily involved in trade and business.

This Women’s Month, Matjekane launches what she believes is not just a beauty pageant but an opportunity for job creation and trade.

“Miss Polo Universe Africa is a revolutionary pageant with a bigger purpose,” Matjekane told Sunday World.

“It’s a diplomatic and economic gateway that positions South African women as global ambassadors in culture and commerce.”

Beauty and brains

Themed “Crown Your Purpose, the pageant, it is Matjekane’s wish, will break the stereotype around these contests only being about beauty. They should also showcase brains.

“The Royal Dubai partnership is to help create a bridge between Africa and the Middle East. We want to promote a cultural exchange to Middle Eastern markets and international business mentorship programs. We are looking for people who are not just beauty queens but driven and motivated to build our economy.”

Earned her stripes

Matjekane adds that she has played her part in other pageants, and it’s time to take a back seat and nurture talent.

“I want to take what I have learned through the years in peagantry and use it. I have been modelling since I was five years old, and I think it’s time to mentor, which is what I am passionate about.”

The judging panel will include a list of South African celebrities who will be announced in due time alongside award-winning entrepreneur Zainan Al Taher.

“Applications are open to everyone between the ages 18 and 40 years old. People can register online from August 15 to August 23.  The pageant does not discriminate against race, creed, or financial status. As long as entrants show drive, motivation, and the dream [to make it big].”

An estimated R500,000 is up for grabs, which will cover international travel, training, wardrobe, and accommodation. The top three hopefuls will get to compete in the Middle East and receive training and entrepreneurship masterclasses with UAE business leaders.
