I’m coming back from a place of strength, not survival – Annie Mthembu

After two years away from reality TV, The Real Housewives of Durban star Annie Mthembu is officially back; stronger, centred, and ready to reclaim her shine.

The RHOD OG joins a powerhouse lineup of women from across the continent in The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip: Africa, the first African edition of the hit franchise.

Mthembu has opened up about her comeback, growth, sisterhood, and the spicy drama fans can expect this season.

“It just felt right,” she says of her decision to return to TV. “After two years away from the cameras, I finally felt like me again; refreshed, recharged, and ready to have fun with it. I took that break to protect my peace and do some serious self-work. Now I’m coming back from a place of strength, not survival.”

And of course, she admits she missed the thrill. “Once you’ve had a taste of reality TV, it’s hard not to miss that energy.”

Confident and proud

As one of the OGs of the longest-running Housewives franchise in Africa, Mthembu says she stepped into Ultimate Girls Trip with confidence and pride.

“I went in open-hearted, ready to have fun, and represent Durban with grace and a little spice. I wasn’t looking for drama, but I also wasn’t going to dim my light or bite my tongue. I wanted to experience the magic of African women coming together and owning their power.”

The realty TV star says her mental and spiritual preparation was key before stepping back under the glare of the cameras.

“I’ve learned that if your mind and heart aren’t in sync, the spotlight can be heavy. So, I prayed, I journaled, I affirmed myself daily. I built a routine that keeps me grounded no matter what chaos is around me. I’m back in the spotlight, but this time, the light is mine.”

For her, the trip brought unexpected friendships and plenty of fiery personalities.

Sisterhood

“I met some incredible women — relatable, fun, and full of energy. It reminded me that women can come together, support one another, and still have the best time.”

She adds, “Mariam and Dr C really surprised me. They’re vibrant, bold, and know how to hold their own. Don’t play with their fire unless you’re ready to feel the heat.”

While the show promises luxury and laughter, Mthembu says not everything was smooth sailing.

“There’s a moment where I lost myself a little because some personal triggers came up. But that’s part of being real. I owned it, worked through it, and came out stronger. I’ve evolved,” she says. “This time, it’s not about surviving, it’s about shining.”
