KwaZulu-Natal-based DJ Hlosiwe Mthalane, fondly known by her stage name DJ Hlo, has won an international award.
She was crowned the Best Star Female DJ of the Year at the Shinning Star Awards held at Cotton Lounge in Bryanston, Johannesburg at the weekend.
DJ Hlo, who won the Ukhozi FM Song of the Year award for her song Isibani in 2021, said her the accolade means a lot to her and her career.
She took to social media to express her gratitude and joy after bagging her first international win.
“To be recognised on such a massive platform, the whole African continent. This is my first international win and I am honoured beyond measure. It is finished,” she said.
The South African turntablist was competing against three other DJs from other African countries including Liberia and Tanzania.
In 2022, DJ Hlo went public and revealed that she suffered cyberbullying from people who did not believe she had won the Ukhozi FM award fair and square.
She said at the time that she was being accused of sleeping her way to the top, which won her the prestigious award.
She later penned a public message explaining how cyberbullying negatively affected her and her family.
Her crowning, she said, opened many local and international doors. However, she did not appreciate the bullying it attracted.
“I have never bribed anyone for my song Isibani to win Song of the Year award. If it was the truth, I would be in the top 10 this year,” she posted.
“I worked hard for that win, not sleeping [around], because I was pushing my song through campaigns.
“I would like to thank my team that stood by me during the tough times.”
