Dawn Thandeka King, a powerhouse in South African television, returns as the formidable Mkabayi in the second season of Shaka iLembe, premiering on Mzansi Magic on June 15, 2025.
In a recent interview, King spoke passionately about her role and the pivotal women who shaped Shaka Zulu’s legacy. She highlighted the production’s mission to rewrite history by spotlighting the unsung heroines behind the iconic Zulu king.
Season 1 of Shaka iLembe focused on the individual journeys of the women in Shaka’s life. Season 2 shifts gears, emphasising their unity.
All three women together
“The first season, each female was creating her own story. This season, it’s all three women together. Shaka’s grandmother, his mother Nandi, and his aunt Mkabayi,” King explained.
She stressed the importance of correcting historical narratives that often credit only Nandi.
“In actual fact, it was all three females. Shaka didn’t rise alone; he had a force of women behind him. That’s what made him who he was.”
King’s portrayal of Mkabayi, a strategic and influential figure in Zulu history, carries profound weight.
“I portray her with great respect. She walked this earth,” King said, acknowledging the real-life significance of Mkabayi kaJama, sister to Shaka’s father, Senzangakhona.
In season 2, as Shaka (Lemogang Tsipa) assumes his role as king. Mkabayi guides him in nation-building while keeping his humility in check. “She’s steering him, but it’s about maintaining his humility,” King noted.
Queen mother
The actress described the “heaviness of the crown” in embodying such a revered figure. “The weight I carry is acknowledging the queen mother’s role and her lasting spirit for women,” she said.
This commitment to authenticity resonates throughout the production. King it praised for highlighting “extremely important historical figures” in Zulu history.
Season 2 promises intense rivalries, alliances, and warfare. King’s commanding performance as Mkabayi is at its heart. A post on X by King hinted at a united sisterhood. It stated: “The women will be more united this season.”
This unity redefines Shaka’s story, giving due credit to the women who shaped his destiny.
With a stellar cast, including Nomzamo Mbatha as Nandi, Shaka iLembe Season 2 is set to be a cultural milestone. King’s portrayal of Mkabayi celebrates the resilience and influence of Zulu women, ensuring their legacy shines.
