Former Generations star Roderick Jaftha is making an on-screen comeback with a role in the all-new Afrikaans telenovela Paradys, which premieres on SABC 2 on February 23.
Known for his role as the flamboyant Glen Majozi on Generations, Jaftha faced financial difficulties in 2024 and turned to social media to raise donations. At the time, the actor made public his financial woes as he struggled to provide for his family.
Jaftha’s plight touched some fans, who assisted him. Speaking to Sunday World this week, the thespian, who will be playing the character of Pastor Clive Booysens in Paradys, reflected on the challenges actors in the local television and film industry are facing.
“I would say that 67% of the people in the film industry are out of work. People are losing houses and cars as the film industry is struggling. It is sad for us when we can’t provide for our families.
“I am glad the SABC has made a decision to uplift the local TV content, where many of us are getting opportunities to work. I am hoping that this is a launchpad for us as actors to get more opportunities, as this means a lot to us,” said Jaftha.
The actor shared that his recent financial hardships taught him valuable lessons about saving for a rainy day.
“I have learnt my lesson; it was painful when my family did not have food. Even though I didn’t sit back and watch them suffer, I had been trying to make things out.
“Being down and out does not even begin to describe it. Imagine having kids and being unable to afford your current rent or even a cheaper place. It was truly a sad situation, but I lived through hope,” he said.
The father of four has declared his intention to live within his financial means.
Jaftha also cautions fans that his new role does not mean he will now have access to an endless stream of money.
“This is not Hollywood. I have a mountain of debt that I need to pay and to provide for my family,” he said.
With Lady Luck now smiling on him, Jaftha said he is slowly getting his mojo back.
“I am not going to allow myself to go back to my horrible experience, as it is not good to be in that position.”
Jaftha will be starring alongside other old hands such as Zane Meas, Ilse Klink, Lorcia Cooper and Vaugn Lucas, among others, in the new telenovela.
