Jazz legend Richard Siluma’s memorial, funeral details announced

Plans for the funeral and memorial service of veteran jazz musician Richard Siluma are underway, following his death earlier this week.
His son, Ntokozo Siluma, confirmed that a memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 28. It will be held at Bassline Newtown, from 1pm to 3pm. The funeral will take place on Sunday, August 31, in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal. It will be a private ceremony for family only, in line with Siluma’s wishes.

“We understand that many would have loved to attend and pay their final respects. And we sincerely apologise for any disappointment this may cause. Your love, prayers, and continued support during this time mean so much to the family.”
Siluma passed away on Monday, August 25. This after he collapsed at the SA Music Rights Organisation (Samro) offices in Johannesburg.
Initial reports suggested he had gone to request a financial advance, but both his son and Samro dismissed the claim.
According to Ntokozo, Siluma had visited Samro to sort out paperwork.
“He seemed healthy and happy, even joking with officials. But on his way out, he collapsed and became unconscious. He was later diagnosed with high blood pressure and never recovered,” he said.

Collapsed at Samro offices

Samro also clarified that Siluma visited their offices on August 11 2025 to access one of the benefits available to members.
His request was approved, but he collapsed shortly after completing his consultation. First aiders and paramedics assisted before he was taken to hospital.
“Siluma came to the Samro offices on 11 August 2025, not on 22 August 2025, in confidence, to access one of the benefits available to him as a member. He signed necessary paperwork, and his request was approved. After completing his consultation, he unfortunately collapsed near the restrooms. He was immediately assisted by Samro first aiders, who called paramedics and ensured he was transported to hospital for further care.
“On 25 August, we received the heart-breaking news from his family that he had sadly passed away. Samro extends its deepest condolences to the Siluma family during this difficult time. South Africa has lost an extraordinary talent, and his contribution to the music industry will be deeply missed. We will be reaching out to his family to offer support through the Samro Funeral Benefit,” said Samro.
