Maskandi powerhouse Khuzani Mpungose has added another proud chapter to his career, earning two nominations at the prestigious Hollywood and African Prestigious Awards (HAPAwards) 2025, set to take place in Los Angeles, US later this year.
The Nkandla-born star is nominated in the categories of Best Independent Artist (African) and Best Male Artist (African), a remarkable recognition of his influence, consistency, and role as a cultural ambassador for African music.
Honours exceptional African talent
The HAPAwards, established in 2017, honour exceptional talent from Africa and the African diaspora. They celebrate individuals who have made significant contributions to arts, entertainment, and community development.
Each year, the event draws global icons, dignitaries, and entertainment leaders in a showcase of African excellence and cross-cultural unity.
Khuzani’s double nomination marks a milestone for maskandi music, a genre that has travelled from the rural hills of KwaZulu-Natal to the global stage. His recognition represents more than personal success.
“Being recognised on an international stage like the HAPAwards is a blessing. It is a reflection of how far maskandi music has come,” Khuzani told Sunday World. “This recognition belongs to every supporter who believed in the journey of authentic African sound.”
He added that the nominations signify a wider message for African artists.
Music that speaks from the heart
“Our sound, born in villages and carried through generations, can stand proudly on global stages. African music doesn’t need translation, and it speaks straight to the heart.”
Over the past decade, Khuzani has become one of South Africa’s most successful independent musicians. He has sold out stadiums in Durban, Johannesburg, and Pietermaritzburg to hosting massive events like the Gcwalisa Spring Picnic All White and Blue Nation Festival. And proved that maskandi not only endures, but thrives among new generations of fans.
His albums have consistently gone platinum. And his music videos dominate digital platforms, all without major label backing. Through his own label and movement, Indlamlenze Development Foundation, Khuzani continues to merge entrepreneurship with artistry.
Beyond the stage, Khuzani’s foundation plays an active role in community upliftment. It runs mentorship programmes for young musicians. It also supports cultural preservation projects in rural areas, and funding youth empowerment and education initiatives.
