South African music star Shandesh, born Rakgoale Nelly Machethe, has found herself embroiled in a social media controversy following comments about Botswana that sparked widespread backlash.
Based in Limpopo, the 21-year-old singer, known for her vibrant performances and cross-border appeal, faced criticism after a misinterpreted Facebook post on June 28, 2025. She wrote: “Botswana is just a dry place with nothing but dust and cows. I perform there, get my money, and leave.”
Comments caused backlash
The remarks, perceived as derogatory, ignited a firestorm on social media, particularly among Botswana fans who felt insulted by the stereotyping of their country as impoverished and unappealing.
Shandesh’s management issued a statement this week clarifying that the comments were taken out of context and intended as humour. They emphasised Shandesh’s deep connection to Botswana. It was the first country outside South Africa to book her for performances, they added.
“Shandesh loves Botswana. She stays extra days [there] to engage with communities, enjoys local cuisine, and appreciates the culture,” the statement read. It went on to apologise for any misconceptions and affirmed her respect for the nation.
Apology met with mixed reactions
Despite the apology, reactions on X remained divided. Some defended her intent and others called for accountability. They cited the insensitivity of her words in light of Botswana’s economic challenges. These include high poverty and unemployment rates, as noted in a 2021 African Development Bank report.
The Limpopo Artists Movement (LAM) also weighed in, acknowledging Shandesh’s “inappropriate word choice” and lapse in judgment.
LAM’s chairperson, Mphoza Mashabela, described the incident as a teaching moment.
“We urge fans and organisers in South Africa and Botswana to show empathy. One mistake shouldn’t erase her contributions to unity through music,” said Mashabela.
LAM said it was committed to providing Shandesh with media coaching to prevent future missteps. It emphasised her remorse and potential for growth.
