Renowned music artist L’vovo Derrango, real name Thokozani Ndlovu, has expressed happiness over Gayton McKenzie’s recent appointment as Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture.
Speaking to Sunday World, L’vovo said McKenzie, a former nightclub owner, is the right politician because he has in the past worked with him before he formed a political party.
At that time, the former gangster was doing sports for inmates and motivating them to take part in sports tournaments.
“I think he is someone who has love for this particular department. Because he did all of this before he was a politician; it was just after he was released from jail. I think he is the right person for the youth because he understands our lifestyle,“ said L’vovo.
New minister understands the arts and its dynamics
L’vovo said he would like to see legends who will work hand-in-hand with McKenzie in the different provinces. This so they can report what challenges they are faced with.
“Even though we have the Department of Arts and Culture, being an ambassador would mean you are influential and have access to the minister.”
Artists go through many challenges, especially those who are not educated about the industry. The Kwaito star said artists get excited about fame and forget about the nitty-gritty of the business.
“Artists go through a lot, and what people see on Instagram is not true. There is too much depression and anger within the industry. That is why we find that some artists die and everyone gets shocked. They do not know that people can go through so much in silence.
“We need to have a course where artists are educated on how to manage their finances and the industry as a whole. Once you are registered with SAMRO, it should be compulsory,” he said.
Recovered from his stroke, releasing a new LP
The Bayang’sukela hitmaker said he has almost recovered after suffering a stroke in 2022, just before Christmas. He will be back at the end of July with a new single from his upcoming EP.
“After the incident, I moved back home and my family has been so supportive, as have some of my industry friends. They make sure that when they are around, they come to check up on me.”
