After years of navigating the complexities of the music industry, Mikhale Jones has boldly reclaimed her artistic independence. With the support of her talented team, she has produced a body of work that is a reflection of her artistry and personal journey.
Jones began her career as a content creator doing covers. And now she has released her second independent album, Too Many Promises.
Her victory in the MTN Pulse Virals competition served as a powerful reminder of her capabilities. On the upcoming album, Jones worked with Ammo Moses, YoshiYuki, and Nothando Mamba, to create her new music.
Telling deeply personal stories
“We locked ourselves in and crafted something special, pulling in tracks that were initially sidelined. Those are tracks like 24/7 and Toxic Trends, which are the current two lead singles. We were also developing new material as well,” said Jones.
Jones describes the project as a blend of neo-soul, RnB, and hip-hop. Music that she can dance to while telling deeply personal stories. The songs chronicle her emotional journey after leaving a toxic relationship. It mirrors her experience in the music industry.
Sidelined by record labels became a turning point
“From being signed to one of the major record labels Def Jam, to facing harsh criticism on my sound. I finally decided to take matters into my own hands. The label shut two of my projects down because it was ‘too RnB’. And I will forever stand on being exactly that.”
Jones said she was pushed to be independent because of frustration after recording many songs. The music was never released because it did not please the record labels. She says the project represents her taking back her power and fulfilling her vision.
“I wanted to be in a room full of talented creatives to collaborate and make gold. With this offering, I believe we achieved exactly that and had so much fun doing it.”
