Thabile Hlela, better known by her stage name Miss Energy, is taking the Durban music scene by storm.
Miss Energy is serenading audiences with her maiden offering Ngizomthola, meaning I will find someone to love.
The amapiano song, a sing-along tune across entertainment venues and local radio stations in KwaZulu-Natal, tells a story of a woman who yearns for unconditional love.
She laments about her lost lover, vowing not to stop searching for her soulmate.
Miss Energy, who released her single in March, told Sunday World that although her initial focus was choreographing and being featured on some music videos of the country’s household artists including the late AKA (Kiernan Forbes) and rapper Blxckie, born Sihle Sithole, her first love was always singing.
“I got my first guitar while at primary school and that’s where my musical prowess was discovered. I then developed songwriting skills at high school,” she recalls fondly.
The 23-year-old Durban-born musician pointed out that her music is influenced by various genres including old R&B, jazz, deep house and hip-hop.
“I’m inspired by a lot of artists who are pioneers in the industry. Artists such as Toni Braxton, Anita Baker, Queen Latifah, Drake and Nicky Minaj are some of my biggest motivations,” she explains.
Miss Energy’s biggest break was when she was invited by DJ Dumile, a known resident DJ at the Empire.
The establishment, located on Davenport Road in the heart of the city, is slowly overtaking Florida Road as a highly sought-after entertainment destination in Durban.
It also serves as a platform to launch upcoming musicians and revive the careers of those who once dazzled the dance scene.
These include DJ Bongs, Sosha, Madanone, DJ Cndo, Tzozo of Woza eDurban fame, Sparks Bantwana, and others who have kept a low profile from the celebrity world.
Apart from the latest offering, Miss Energy plans to release another music project featuring prominent amapiano artists.
“My current single is doing extremely well on the streaming platforms,” she said.
“My plan is to release more music in the near future. But I would also like to see myself performing for international audiences.”
