Never allow the fear of failure to cripple you, says Boity Thulo

When media personality and businesswoman Boity Thulo first launched her own cologne, Boity Pink Sapphire, in September 2020, she described it as a scent fit for a powerful African queen.

It was developed during lockdown, launched online through its own channels as well as Superbalist and Takealot, and later made available at Clicks stores.

At the time, Boity said the lockdown and the rise in online shopping had served the Boity brand well and ensured a positive response and good sales after the product went live at the end of 2020, but many local consumers still wanted to purchase the cologne in store.

“We did extremely well during a particularly challenging time, and the response has been very positive,” she said.

Cologne now sells for R60

“Although the pandemic has seen many people embrace online shopping, we realised that, for a high-end brand such as this, we also needed to have a brick-and-mortar presence.”

Almost four years later, it has emerged on social media that the cologne is now being sold at a low price of R60.

At the time, when she started the business, a 100ml bottle retailed for about R1 495.

On Thursday, Boity said she understood that sometimes business does not go according to plan, and was not ashamed of her perfume business failing.

She went on to state that she would not stop trying again.

Do not be afraid to try

Currently, the rapper has a haircare range, an alcohol brand, and toning-support supplements.

Writing on her social media account, Boity said she appreciated the love, constructive feedback, and advice regarding her business ventures.

“Don’t be afraid to try and never allow the fear of failure to cripple you. The dream was placed in your heart for a purpose,” she wrote.

“It will eventually work out exactly the way it’s meant to. We are still learning.”
