Police officers who ‘stole’ from Serge Cabonge due in court

Serge Cabonge, popularly known for his “blesser” days, will face police officers who allegedly stole from him and unlawfully arrested him in January.

The police officers will appear at the Randburg magistrate’s court after the businessman took to the high court accusing them of soliciting a bribe from him during his arrest.

He also alleged that the officers stole cash and a Rolex watch valued at R195 000, among other things.

Cabonge, who is also in the process of suing the Johannesburg metro police for R1-million for his unlawful arrest, demands that the officers be arrested and charged like normal civilians ahead of their court appearance.

This comes after he was acquitted of reckless and negligent driving, fraud and bribery charges in May.

Speaking to Sunday World briefly on Thursday, Cabonge confirmed that the matter is due in court on September 27.

“I want to know why have they not been officially charged and arrested? Why do they just get notified to appear in court and not through a police station like other suspects.” he said.

Charges were laid against Cabonge in January after he allegedly skipped a red traffic light in Sandton, Johannesburg.

After his acquittal, he filed a lawsuit in the high court in Johannesburg stating that his arrest was unlawful and demanded damages to be paid to him.

In a letter of demand sent to Johannessburg Metro Police Department chief David Tembe by Cabonge’s lawyers, he indicated that his Golf 5R was searched by the officers while he was being placed at the back of a police van.

“The JMPD left Sandton [police station] under the pretense of taking our client to the Bramley [police station] for a breathalyzer test, but instead took him to a secluded area and assaulted him,” reads a letter of demand.

“Allegedly, during the unlawful arrest, our client was robbed by members of the JMPD of the following items: R15 000 of the R20 000 that was in his car and a Rolex Oyster perpetual date timepiece valued at R195 000, which he wore at the time of the unlawful arrest.”

He also alleged to have sustained injuries during his arrest and demanded R200 000 for unlawful arrest, R50 000 for injuries sustained during his arrest, R100 000 for pain and suffering, and a reimbursement of R15 000 the police allegedly stole from his car.
