Popular former sangoma Tumi Motsoeneng criticises traditional healing

Club DJ Tumi Motsoeneng, a former well-known sangoma (traditional healer) affectionately known as Gogo Skhotheni, has criticised ubungoma, claiming it is incorrect.

The practice of ubungoma entails speaking with ancestors, who use a variety of methods, such as divination with candles, water, or bones, to lead and teach the practitioner.

The reality TV personality recently discussed on her podcast how she left ubungoma for Christianity.

Motsoeneng claims that she left ubungoma because it did not make sense.

“I did not wake up and stop; there are many things that I had to discover, things that did not make sense,” Motsoeneng said.

Although she did not condemn those who are still practising, she did say that the practice was wrong, even though she had initiated some people who wanted to become sangomas.

“I am not judging anyone who believes in ancestors. I am not judging anyone who is a traditional healer.

“I am saying everyone who is gifted knows themselves; however, the ubungoma part that comes with the gift that they originally have is what is wrong,” she emphasised.

A gift is different from ubungoma

Motsoeneng added that ubungoma does not go with a person’s gift.

“Your gift does not go with ubungoma. I am saying the ubungoma part that you have invited in the gift that you already have is what is wrong.

“I do not believe that someone can pass a gift to me; a gift must be something I am born with.

“If I am going to die today, and I am saying I am going to leave my gift to Liyana [her daughter], I am not leaving my gift, but I am leaving what I went to fetch, which is ubungoma.

“That shows that ubungoma has nothing to do with your gift. You cannot pass a gift.”

Recently, the contentious former sangoma gained popularity after being baptised, abandoning ubungoma for church.

She has been outspoken about her recent conversion to Christianity.
