‘Religion has a strong stance against masturbation’

In the first episode of Dineo Ranaka’s podcast titled Sex ‘n Stuff, a number of topics were touched on including a link between sexual and mental health, as well as sex and Christianity.

Ranaka opened up about her own dark season and that only she knows the truth about what has been happening in her life.

“During the dark season, my sexual hormones are raging and I feel I need to talk to people that can help me understand, the link between sexual and mental health,” said Ranaka.

Mpume Zenada, an obstetrician, gynecologist and sexologist, said people need to look at things that affect their sexual lives.

Pastor Neville Van Wyk said religion has a strong stance against masturbation and that there is a context and a place for sex. He added that one cannot legislate what is acceptable sex, because sex in marriage has to be consensual.

“Scripture speaks about what is legitimate and illegitimate when it comes to sexuality. In the context of marriage, masturbation is a different concept.

“Many times pastors and preachers want to dictate what is acceptable sex in marriage, which they shouldn’t,” said Van Wyk.

Jo-Mangaliso Mdhlela, a political activist, educationalist, and church activist, said religion has no business in matters that do not concern itself.

“Choice of individuals is clear, so religion should understand its role, which should not interfere with roles that do not necessarily fit its own mandate,”said Mdhlela.

“The mandate of religion is to be part of the community, as for private matters such as sexuality, it has no say with that.”
