The SA Revenue Service (SARS) has set its sights on revered award-winning motswako proponent Khuli Chana.
Sunday World can exclusively reveal that Khuli Chana owes the taxman (SARS) more than R1.1- million in unpaid taxes.
News that Khuli Chana is a tax dodger came to the fore when the revenue service applied for judgment against the Hape le Hape hitmaker in the high court in Johannesburg last week.
According to court papers that we have, Khuli Chana’s company, Khuli Chana Holdings, owes the revenue service more than R426 000 for value-added tax (VAT), however, the quantum has since ballooned to over R615 000.
This after R30 000 in penalties and over R160 000 interests were added to his company’s debt. Chana, who has two children with one of South Africa’s most sought-after DJs, Lamiez Hollworthy, also owes the taxman over R30 000 in unpaid pay as you earn (PAYE).
The amount skyrocketed to more R445 000 after SARS imposed R11 000 penalties and over R135 000 interest on the Prada hitmaker’s debt.
The talented rap mega star, whose company was audited by SARS at its branch in Witbank, Mpumalanga also owes the taxman a total of just under R19 000 in unemployment insurance fund (UIF).
This after the musician’s original (UIF) debt of more than R11 000 incurred close to R6 000 interest and over R1 000 in penalties.
The famous recording superstar, who is the brains behind the top-charting potboiler Mnatebawen, also found himself in the soup after his skill development levy books were found to be in shambles, meaning he also owes SARS an additional R1 500.
In total, read the court papers, Chana, who rocked the amapiano aficionados with the stellar cut Buyile in 2021, owes the taxman more than R1 113 385.
Chana is not the only celebrity who has rubbed the taxman the wrong way.
A few years ago, SARS unleashed liquidators to recover R90-million from controversial Kaizer Chiefs team manager Bobby Motaung and his business partners for failing to pay their company’s taxes.
The R90-million was the outstanding balance of R97-million that SARS demanded from Nthwese Investment Holding Consortium in which Motaung, Herbert Theledi, Reitumetse Huntley and Job Sikhosana were the directors.
The tax-collecting agency also had a showdown with producer and TV presenter Kgomotso Matsunyane’s company, alleging it owed SARS over R1.5-million in unpaid VAT.
The amount ballooned to more than R2.2-million after R221 000 penalties and over R69 000 interest were imposed.
Matsunyane’s company, which has offices in Johannesburg and Cape Town, also owes over R280 000 for PAYE. The amount increased to R390 000 after more than R26 000 penalties and R75 000 interest were added.
Award-winning musician and media personality Sbusiso Arthur Leope was previously also slapped with a whopping R15-million tax bill by SARS.
Sunday World revealed that SARS obtained a default judgment against the former Metro FM DJ, popularly known as DJ Sbu, in the high court in Johannesburg, after he failed to pay the money.
The taxman once also declared war against popular house music pair consisting of twin brothers Bandile and Banele Mbere, who are famous for throwing star-studded festivals called Major League Gardens at the FNB Stadium.
The duo was slapped with just under R9-million tax bill.
