Thobela FM is ablaze with drama following the SABC radio station’s replacement of adored presenter Taemane “Lenny T” Phahlane (Legodi) from the well-liked morning show Ditlalemeso.
The charismatic host, a listener favourite for his vibrant energy, has been replaced by Skeem Saam actor and veteran Thobela FM presenter Skhumbuzo Mbatha, igniting a firestorm of protests and debates among fans.
Despite having a signed contract for the 2025–2026 season, Lenny T was allegedly denied access to the SABC’s Polokwane studios in April, which sparked the controversy.
According to insiders, the SABC declared Lenny T’s contract “ineffective”, leaving him in a precarious situation where he is uncertain whether he was fired or demoted.
Outraged by the station’s move, hundreds of dedicated listeners organised several marches to the public broadcaster’s offices in Limpopo to call for Lenny T’s return.
The ANC Youth League in Limpopo has also threatened to escalate the matter if talks with station management collapse.
Legal challenge setback
Adding to the saga, sources revealed Lenny T rejected a tempting R90 000-a-month deal from Capricorn FM to stay loyal to Thobela FM, only to face what fans call a “betrayal”.
Lenny T’s attempt to legally challenge the decision faced a setback when the Polokwane High Court dismissed his urgent application to block Mbatha’s appointment and reinstate him, necessitating a more extensive court process.
Mbatha, who is well-known for his role as Meneer Manaka on Skeem Saam and for his voice on Thobela FM’s Ntshirogele afternoon show, now hosts the 6am–9am Ditlalemeso slot.
While Mbatha’s experience and on-air charm make him a strong contender, his appointment has been marred by the controversy surrounding Lenny T’s exit.
Mbatha himself has recently had difficulties, such as an arrest for suspected drunk driving in March and a terrifying armed robbery in September 2024.
Sunday World contacted the SABC, and we will add a comment as soon as it is available.
