The announcement, made on Wednesday, has sent ripples through South Africa’s media landscape, with the station assuring stakeholders that the matter is being handled with fairness, sensitivity, and due process.
Kaya 959 confirms news
In a statement, Kaya 959 said: “We want to assure all staff that the matter is being handled with fairness, sensitivity, and due process. At this stage, no further details can be shared, but we will keep you informed as soon as there are developments. We appreciate your professionalism and understanding during this period.”
The station emphasised its commitment to maintaining stability and delivering high quality programming for its listeners despite the development.
Sol Phenduka, whose full name is Solomzi Thandubuntu Phenduka, joined Kaya 959 on July 1 2022. He joined the radio station alongside Dineo Ranaka as part of a major reshuffle to bolster its breakfast show, 959 Breakfast.
The duo’s arrival was met with excitement from listeners. Fans and listeners praised Phenduka’s sharp wit and Ranaka’s seasoned radio presence. Their appointment followed the reassignment of former breakfast hosts Thomas Msengana and Skhumba Hlophe to a different slot.
Seasoned radio host
Phenduka was previously known for his work on youth radio YFM and Metro FM. He is also well-known for his role as co-host of the popular Podcast and Chill. The seasoned presenter brought a fresh dynamic to Kaya 959, quickly earning a dedicated following.
His tenure at Kaya 959 has not been without controversy. In August 2022, shortly after joining, social media backlash emerged over alleged tensions between Phenduka and Ranaka. Some listeners claimed Ranaka overshadowed him on air.
A viral video showed Phenduka raising his hand to speak during an interview, sparking accusations that Ranaka was side-lining him.
Kaya 959 defended the show’s structure, clarifying that Ranaka was the main anchor. It said Phenduka was the co-host and traffic reporter, dismissing claims of disharmony.
