Stephen Grootes dumps SABC for Primedia’s ‘Money Show’

The SABC has announced the departure of Stephen Grootes.

Grootes, who is currently on SAfm, will leave the station at the end of July to pursue a new career opportunity.

In the statement, SABC radio management thanked him for his loyal service and impeccable work ethic, wishing him well in his future endeavours.

It is said that a new presenter for SAfm Sunrise will be announced in due course.

Grootes said in the statement: “It has been the honour of my professional life to speak to the entire nation every morning over the last six years, and I have learned an incredible amount from presenting SAfm Sunrise. I will deeply miss the Sunrise team, our listeners, and particularly our callers.”

The Money Show
Grootes is reportedly rejoining Primedia Broadcasting to host The Money Show on 702 and CapeTalk.

The Money Show is broadcast on CapeTalk and 702 on weekday evenings between 6pm and 8pm.

He began his career at Primedia Broadcasting as an EWN reporter in 2002. Bruce Whitfield hosted the Money Show for 20 years until his departure on June 27.

Grootes later moved up to the role of EWN’s senior political editor, a position he held for 15 years.

He also hosted the Midday Report on 702 and CapeTalk for five years and had a stint hosting the Breakfast Show on 702.
Newzroom Afrika anchor
Grootes departed from CapeTalk and 702 to host the breakfast show, SAfm Sunrise, on SAfm, where he has spent the last six years.

Grootes is also an anchor on Newzroom Afrika and has been contributing to The Daily Maverick for the last 15 years.

“After an intense political period, this is the perfect time to return to Primedia, as many of our national debates will now be about business and the economy.

The Money Show is an important part of our national narrative, and this is an amazing chance to help drive that discussion,” he said.

  1. It’s very much of a pity that Stephen Groote’s is leaving SAFM Sunrise.
He is absolutely the most brilliant radio reporter that I ever listened to in my life (I am 82 years old now).
For years I stood up every morning at 5.30 to listen to his show and everytime when I listened to him I was astonished about all the facts of so many subjects that he has stored in his “computer” memory.
It feels as if I am going to loose a very good friend.
I hope you do well and be happy with your new job Stephen, again I will going to miss you a lot.

  2. Wishing you all the best, Stephen.

I regularly listen to your morning broadcasts, and you are one of the main reasons I tune into SAFM. Your professionalism in hosting the show is commendable. You have a unique and effective way of engaging with callers, whether countering antagonistic arguments or addressing the highly sensitive issues facing our nation.

I wish you every success in your future endeavors. Your new employers are fortunate to have you on board.
