Mzwakhe Mbuli, affectionately known as People’s Poet, is accusing the SABC of being addicted to foreign music and has warned that he is unsinkable.
This after Mbuli alleged that the public broadcaster has put a red tape on his music, telling the broadcaster to “go to hell”.
He accused the SABC of blocking his new album from getting airplay in all radio stations and TV channels owned by the public broadcaster.
“The SABC is addicted to foreign music, and they are now exposed. They do not want to see a black person thriving. Do not be misled by their sugarcoated poison slogan, the airwaves are not free,” Mbuli said.
“My talent is from God, and nobody can take it from me. I am unsinkable. I am relieved the song is trending and loved regardless of man-made barriers. God always has a way of shaming the devil.”
Mbuli said it is not the first time he has been at loggerheads with the public broadcaster.
In his retaliation for his music not being played on SABC platforms, the poet and musician showed the broadcaster the middle finger and turned down requests for interviews.
He told Sunday World this week that the SABC is depriving his fans an opportunity to listen to his new album Vuka Darkie featuring songs such as Panyaza and Marawa.
An insider at the SABC said a song about sports presenter Robert Marawa “invited all the trouble” for Mbuli. The number celebrates Marawa’s prowess as an accomplished broadcaster. The seasoned presenter was fired by the public broadcaster in 2021.
“What angered the SABC bosses the most was the song called Marawa, and this was one of the first singles that was supposed to be played,” said an insider.
“The SABC officials told music compilers that they would be dealt with if they play such a song. Thereafter, there was a blanket approach to gag the whole album at the broadcaster.”
Another source claimed that despite the popularity of songs by Mbuli on social media, his sin is that he does not compromise on issues around injustice.
“As you know that Mzwakhe is outspoken about many things, some of his words do not sit well with those in power, and this act of sabotage by the SABC is aimed at destabilising him,” said the source.
Mbuli’s spokesperson Madumetja Mzankomo said the public broadcaster’s behaviour gave a lie to a claim that it is impartial and independent.
“Mzwakhe Mbuli’s latest album Vuka Darkie is gagged by the public broadcaster, as none of the eight tracks enjoy airplay from 18 SABC radio stations,” said Mzankomo.
“Ironically, the album was launched at the SABC studios in Auckland Park. After this snub, we have decided not to accept SABC interviews.
“We have received endless requests from the SABC current affairs shows, especially on topical issues that are related to arts and culture.
“The SABC will pump the People’s Poet music when he is dead. Mzwakhe will prevail despite the SABC vendetta against him.”
