Actor and television personality Wright Ngubeni will host a reality show Ku Ruff – a show about the struggles as a sole breadwinner and the burdens of black tax.
“It’s rough,”, he says about black tax having no rules.
“I think the line between responsibilities and entitlement is very complex. Ku Ruff is about changing lives in a positive way and having conversations that we, as black people, seldom have,” he said.
Ngubeni is also no stranger to black tax. Although he’s never experienced it from immediate family, there have been instances where he had to assist extended family – even though he didn’t know themvery well.
“In our family, we have always tried to elevate everyone and make sure that everyone is good, so at certain times in our lives, there have been moments when the ‘burden’ fell on just one person. I am only realising this now as an adult,” said Ngubeni.
He added that black tax isnot only ‘financial abuse’, but is also ‘mentally draining’.
“It can be detrimental to your mental health, as I have seen with some of the people I have worked with on kuRuff.”
