Former Isibaya actor Zakhele Mabasa-Mokone is returning to the small screens in a new Showmax comedy series, One Weeks.
Mabasa-Mokone is well known for his starring role in Mzansi Magic’s telenovela Isibaya as Skhaleni Mngomezulu. He was in the series from the start until the production wrapped up in the eighth season.
Mabasa-Mokone will be starring as Fana in the series alongside Sihle Ndaba, who will portray the role of Lihle.
Feel-good series about ordinary lives
Mabasa-Mokone said: “A lot of things have been quite stressful. And I just believe that now is the time that people enjoy some feel-good, family-oriented content like One Weeks. We will always be confronted with problems. Now is the time to really sit back and laugh at ourselves and what we as a society go through.”
Ndaba added that the cast of the series is amazing, the storyline is beautiful and relatable. One Weeks is just such a feel-good show, he said.
“One Weeks is also an interesting juxtaposition of two people from different backgrounds: the suburbs and the township. It shows us two worlds that are often considered incompatible. Worlds we hardly see on-screen together, but for some reason, these two worlds work well together. Despite their glaring differences, Lihle and Fana still love each other. And they try by all means to find common ground,” said Ndaba.
The series, created and written by Chris Q. Radebe, also stars the likes of Siphiwe Mtshali and Mpho Malatsi.
Explores different relationship dynamics
Radebe believes One Weeks not only taps into the wicked sense of humour that South Africans possess. It also sheds light on the financial dynamics between partners in a relationship.
“South Africans love to laugh at themselves. For this particular show, the premise showcases how partners carry themselves in a relationship. Especially where gender roles are reversed.
“Every broke guy sitting at a corner in the township aspires to date a successful woman. Because they think only about the perks. One Weeks holds up a mirror to the side of this dynamic that they know nothing about. The amount of work it takes to keep a woman of such calibre,” says Radebe.
