Zawadi YaMungu celebrates African culture through her music

The musical journey of award-winning musician, vocalist, and indigenous instrumentalist Zawadi YaMungu has brought her recognition on a national and international level.

Real name Nkosingiphile Mpanza, Zawadi YaMungu, won an international award this year after receiving her first-ever nomination for Best Female Musician of the Year at the Ladies in Media Awards, which were held in Ghana in March.

She feels that she has succeeded in establishing herself as a genuine musical talent.

In addition to her vocal abilities, she possesses skills as a composer, arranger, and master player of the traditional African instrument, the uMakhweyana bow.

Mpanza said this week in an interview with Sunday World that she studied acting, screenwriting, and music.

Because of her varied upbringing, she is able to approach her craft from multiple angles and incorporate both house and cultural music elements into her work.

“My collaboration with DJ Merlon showcases this fusion, captivating listeners with its
infectious rhythms and soulful melodies,” she said.

“My musical journey has been a testament to her dedication to celebrating African culture and heritage.”

Inspired by Princess Magogo

She draws inspiration from notable individuals like Princess Magogo and Busi Mhlongo, incorporating native instruments and vocals into her music to create a rich tapestry of sound that honours her African roots.

“My music goes beyond mere entertainment, delving into the profound significance of
ancestral African harmonies and the wisdom embedded within indigenous African cultural realms.


“The compositions beautifully blend traditional instruments with contemporary sounds, creating a harmonious bridge between the past and the present while providing healing components.”

Her captivating vocal ability enthrals audiences everywhere.

Under the direction of the gifted Mbuso Khoza, she has dazzled audiences with shows like Ijadu le Afrika and the Isandlwana Lecture, expertly fusing her distinct musical style with engrossing storylines.
