Crime intelligence head Dumisani Khumalo nabbed for graft

The Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) has arrested national head of crime intelligence Lieutenant-General Dumisani Khumalo.

Khumalo was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport on Thursday by members of IDAC.

After he was arrested, Khumalo was transported to Brooklyn police station in Pretoria, where he was processed and charged.

Looting of slush fund

IDAC spokesperson Henry Mamothame confirmed that Khumalo was arrested; however, he said he could not reveal more details as the top cop hasn’t appeared in court. Two highly placed sources and an online publication stated that Khumalo was nabbed for alleged corruption related to the looting of funds in the crime intelligence slush fund. He was also nabbed for being involved in irregular appointments in the police department.

“You should understand that there is a lot of corruption happening in the SAPS. And the arrest of Khumalo came as no surprise at all. There are still many other top officials who will be arrested,” said a source familiar with the matter.

Another mole also told Sunday World that Khumalo’s arrest had sent shockwaves through the police department, and this is evidence that those implicated in crime while hiding behind the uniform are in for a big surprise.

“Things are very hectic as you can see. Those top officials who had been using their power to be involved in corruption are now seeing flames. Heads are still going to roll,” said our mole.

Crime Intelligence CFO nabbed

Khumalo’s arrest comes a few weeks after the Crime Intelligence Unit’s Chief Financial Officer, Major-General Philani Lushaba, was nabbed.

Before his arrest, Lushaba had allegedly vanished from his house when the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) was about to interrogate him on his involvement in financial misconduct related to a R45-million property scandal. The unit had allegedly spent millions of rands on irregular property purchases without proper sanctions.

Ian Cameron, chairperson of the portfolio committee on police, confirmed the matter.

“The imminent arrest of Lt Gen Khumalo relates to serious allegations. These include irregular appointments and the looting of SAPS Crime Intelligence slush funds.

“This again raises deep concerns about the integrity crisis within the senior management of the SAPS. I repeat, an urgent skills audit, integrity audit, and full review of SAPS management is overdue.”

Calls for skills, integrity audit

“I repeat, a skills audit, integrity audit and urgent review of management are essential,” he said.

IDAC spokesperson Henry Mamothame had not responded to our questions at the time of publishing.
