Two people of interest have been apprehended in connection with the murder of well-known boxer Zolani Tete, who was shot dead at NU 17, Mdantsane, on Friday, June 21, the South African Police Service (SAPS) says.
The individuals, aged 30 and 22, were apprehended in Ku Gompo on Saturday during an intelligence-driven operation involving multiple law enforcement units.
In a statement over the weekend, the SAPS said the suspects were also being questioned about the attempted murder of the 27-year-old female woman passenger who was wounded in the attack.
Tete was ambushed at his gate by two balaclava-clad gunmen who opened fire on him and his female passenger at around 6.30pm. He drove into his yard and died on the scene. His companion was wounded and taken to hospital.
The SAPS said the motive for the shooting could not be disclosed as the investigation was ongoing. Investigators were following several leads and expected more arrests.
